The muskox lives in the frozen tundra. No other hoofed animal lives as far north as the musk ox. The animal's protection from harsh cold comes from two kinds of fur that comprise its 3-4" thick coat. The outer fur is coarse and stiff, but the under fur is soft and not only able to keep the muskox very warm in winter but also the people who wear clothes made from it. This downy-soft underwool, called qiviut (pronounced "kiv'-ee-ute"), is eight times warmer than wool, softer than cashmere, and extraordinarily lightweight. It is gathered after it is shed naturally each year during the spring months and is one of the finest natural fibers known to man. Yarns spun from qiviut cost about $80. an ounce! This muskox is made from sheep’s wool, however, and stands about 6” tall. |
